In many free-range hunting areas, particularly those north of South Africa, outfitters follow a standard set of regulations dictated by government bodies. In many cases, a government game scout will accompany hunters to ensure the laws are being followed.

However, the situation changes when dealing with privately owned hunting reserves and game ranches as they are called in South Africa. Whether the area is enclosed by a high fence or not, the property owner sets the rules within the framework of the law.

Your decision ultimately comes down to what you value in your hunt. Do you prefer a challenging, fair-chase hunt, or are you comfortable with more relaxed rules and settings? Are you a purist hunter, someone who is mainly focused on taking the shot, or a collector aiming to gather trophies under different conditions? This distinction will help guide your choice of territory, as some hunters avoid high-fence areas, while others may be fine hunting from a vehicle or using artificial light, practices that are legal in certain parts of Africa. Check if airport transfers are included in your package. If not, who is responsible for them, and is the transfer company reputable and insured? This is especially important in case of any accidents since insurance companies won’t cover incidents involving unlicensed transport operators.

There is a famous job description written by the late Peter Hathaway Capstick a Professional Hunter who worked in the remote wilds of Africa who so aptly describes the qualities of this highly desired career:

“Wanted: Young active man interested in low and infrequent pay to play “Bwana” in remote bushveldt. Must be a proven raconteur and socialite without liver trouble, expert card player, bartender, caterer, barbecue specialist, philosopher and African historian. Experience in sanitary engineering, local architecture, labour relations, navigation, medicine, and pharmacology, botany, zoology, ichthyology, mineralogy, entomology, butcher, taxidermist, dietetics, optics, photography and radio navigation essential. Applicant should speak at least two black African languages fluently as well as one other modern European tongue. A knowledge of mechanics, driving, gunsmithing, toxicology, ballistics, tracking, marksmanship, handloading, and experience as a bodyguard are required. Benefits are twenty four hour a day, unlimited fresh air, including rain, sun and dust, no medical, dental or life insurance and no retirement benefits. Applicant should supply his own rifles. Vehicles on a per diem basis. The duties of a Professional Hunter on safari are essentially the same as those of a ship’s captain and with the same responsibilities. He’s everything from the social director to the ships surgeon, if needed. He’s the author of the strategy of the hunting plan, but also the tactician as to make each stalk. He keeps the peace amongst the staff, oversees the food and drink, translates and interprets, sees that the trophies are properly handled and is a shooting coach, gunsmith, stand-up comedian and diplomat at all time he is called on to be so. A Professional Hunter is perhaps best summed up in the observation that he is the social equal to anybody while on safari, up to and including a duke.”

Before finalising any bookings, take the time to do some thorough research. Ask yourself some essential questions: how will you get there, when is the best time, and why did you choose this specific location? Which country is your hunting spot, and what documents are required for entry? Do you have a clear understanding of your destination? In Southern Africa, the power voltage is 220V with three-pin plugs. While some camps offer adapters, it’s wise to pack your own. Rust De Winter Safaris also provides hairdryers in every room.

Should I bring my own toiletries?

The San and Khoi peoples, among the region's oldest indigenous populations, have been hunting for over 11,000 years. The ancient practice is documented through numerous San rock paintings and carbon-dated animal bones found in caves across Southern Africa.

Hunting Laws and Regulations in South Africa

Hunting, including recreational hunting by international visitors, is legal and available across all South African provinces. Each province has its own nature conservation ordinances and holds significant authority over wildlife management, more so than the national government. For example, while South Africa has a unified national driver’s license, professional hunters and outfitters must obtain separate licenses to operate in each province where they intend to hunt. All hunting licenses and permits are issued by provincial government offices.

Although hunting regulations can vary from province to province, there are many commonalities across the board. Some of the key regulations include:

International Hunters: Non-resident hunters must be accompanied by a registered professional hunter and must use a licensed outfitter.
Licensing Requirements: Outfitters and professional hunters need to be licensed in each province where they operate.
Dangerous Game Hunting: Professional hunters require a specific license to conduct safaris for dangerous game; otherwise, they are restricted to hunting plains game.
Licenses and Permits: Hunting licenses and permits must be arranged before the hunt begins.
Exemption Certificates: Game ranches with exemption certificates or certificates of adequate enclosure may apply for exceptions to provincial hunting regulations.
Calibre Requirements: Minimum calibre requirements exist in some provinces, with a .375 calibre generally required for hunting dangerous game.
Shooting from Vehicles: Regulations on shooting from a vehicle vary; some provinces allow it, while others require hunters to be at least 200 meters away from the vehicle before shooting.

Licenses and Permits

CITES Permits: The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) regulates the import and export of certain endangered or near-endangered species. Hunters must obtain the necessary permits from both the country of origin and the destination country to ensure compliance with these regulations.
TOPS Permits: A Threatened or Protected Species (TOPS) permit must be obtained for listed species before the hunt. After the hunt, the client must sign the permit to authorize the export of the animal’s parts from South Africa.
General Hunting Licenses and Permits: Most animals fall under this category. Outfitters are responsible for securing the appropriate provincial hunting permits or licenses. In some provinces, landowners with the correct certifications may be exempt from requiring a hunting license.

Firearms and Ammunition

It is legal to bring hunting firearms into South Africa, but there are specific limitations and regulations to be aware of:

Airline Regulations: Before booking your flight, confirm that the airline permits the transportation of firearms, as policies vary.
Calibre Requirements: The minimum calibre for plains game larger than a springbuck is a .270 or 7 mm rifle. A minimum of a .375 is required for hunting giraffes and dangerous game, and full metal jackets or monolithic solids must be used for pachyderms.
Handguns: Long-barrelled handguns (.357 calibre) with a barrel length of 100-150 mm may be used for hunting plains game.
Rental Options: To simplify travel, hunters may opt to rent a rifle from their outfitter. This is legal in South Africa, and most outfitters have suitable firearms available for their clients.

Bowhunting

Bowhunting has been legal in South Africa since the mid-1980s. Various types of bows, including recurve, longbows, compound, and crossbows, are permitted. The following standards apply based on the size of the game:

Category 1 (Small Game): A bow with a minimum draw weight of 40 pounds, generating at least 30 ft/lbs of kinetic energy, and using arrows weighing a minimum of 300 grains.
Category 2 (Medium Game): A bow with a minimum draw weight of 50 pounds, generating at least 50 ft/lbs of kinetic energy, and using arrows weighing a minimum of 400 grains.
Category 3 (Large Game): A bow with a minimum draw weight of 60 pounds, generating at least 60 ft/lbs of kinetic energy, and using arrows weighing a minimum of 500 grains.
Category 4 (Cape Buffalo): A bow with a minimum draw weight of 80 pounds, generating at least 80 ft/lbs of kinetic energy, and using arrows weighing a minimum of 750 grains.
Category 5 (Giraffe): A bow with a minimum draw weight of 90 pounds, generating at least 90 ft/lbs of kinetic energy, and using arrows weighing a minimum of 750 grains.
Pachyderms: The hunting of pachyderms (elephants and rhinos) with a bow is prohibited.

Additional conditions include the requirement of 5% additional kinetic energy for mechanical broadheads, and broadheads must have at least two cutting edges. The minimum arrow length is set at 50 cm.

Trophy Export/Import Restrictions

South Africa adheres to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) guidelines and has robust conservation management strategies in place. Legally hunted trophies can be exported through a registered taxidermist and shipping company, provided they meet the importing country’s regulations. No raw meat, skins, or other derivatives may be exported without a veterinary clearance certificate to prevent the spread of diseases like foot-and-mouth.

Documentation required for trophy export includes:

A copy of the SA Professional Hunter Register and Trophy Export Application, signed by the client, professional hunter, and outfitter.
A signed Hunting Permit, depending on the species and province.
A CITES Import Permit for Appendix I species.
A Nature Conservation Exemption Permit or Certificate of Adequate Enclosure (CAE).
Transfer of Hunting Rights from Landowner to Hunting Outfitter.

The word "Safari" comes from the Swahili language, which is spoken in several East African countries. In Swahili, "safari" means "journey" or "expedition." Historically, it was used to refer to long journeys, often for exploration or trade. Today, it is most commonly associated with wildlife tourism and adventure travel, where it refers to trips or expeditions to observe, hunt and experience wildlife in their natural habitats, particularly in Africa.

FAMILY HISTORY

The earliest South African ancestor of the Basson family was Arnoldus Willemsz Basson, who arrived in the Cape in 1665. His legacy continued through generations of influential figures, including farmers and community leaders.

Stefan's story is one steeped in the rugged charm of the South African wilderness, a tale that echoes with the timeless rhythms of the bush and the wisdom passed down from father to son. Born into an Afrikaans-speaking family in the rolling hills of Klipriver, near Ladysmith in KwaZulu-Natal, Stefan's life was destined to intertwine with the untamed beauty of the land from the very beginning.

In 1985, his father, a man of the land with the kind of hands that have known the soil, purchased what would become their family farm—a cattle ranch sprawling under the African sun. It was here that young Stefan, at the tender age of 15, faced a rite of passage that would forever etch itself into his memory. It was 1986, a year marked by the celestial wonder of Halley’s Comet streaking across the night sky, a sight that seemed to herald the adventure that awaited him.

On a day that began like any other, Stefan’s father, with the quiet authority of a man who had lived by the land, handed him a rifle and gave him a simple command: “Son, take this man to shoot a buck.” The young Stefan, still green in the ways of the hunt, looked at his father and replied, “But dad, I do not know how to hunt.” His father’s response was as timeless as the bush itself, “Well, you will soon learn.”

And learn he did. That day, with the steady hand of a novice yet the heart of a lion, Stefan guided his client through the brush. The cattle ranch was home to the “Trek Kudu,” migrating kudu that roamed freely across farms in search of sustenance, undeterred by the absence of high fences. As the day wore on, the moment of truth arrived. The shot rang out, echoing across the plains, and when the dust settled, an impala lay still—a testament to a young boy’s first successful hunt. The rifle, a .222 that belonged to his father, became a cherished heirloom, a symbol of that day, and a piece of his history that he proudly still owns.

As time moved on, the farm and the family evolved. In the late 80s, Stefan’s father made the difficult decision to sell a portion of the ranch, a piece of land that would later call to Stefan like a siren’s song. In 2014, with the same determination that characterised his first hunt, Stefan bought back that very piece of land. He game-fenced it, transforming it into a sanctuary not just for the wildlife that roamed freely, but for those who sought the serenity and thrill of the African bush.

By 2019, Stefan’s vision had materialised into something extraordinary—a luxury lodge that stands today as his pride and joy. It’s a place where the past meets the present, where the echoes of his youth and the lessons learned from his father resonate in every corner. The lodge is not just a retreat; it’s a narrative, a story woven into the very fabric of the land.

Despite his demanding career as a full-time lawyer, Stefan’s commitment to his clients is unwavering. While he may not always be present during the hunts, his presence is felt in every detail of the experience. When and How to Tip

In South Africa, tipping is a customary practice in the hunting industry, with hunters typically providing gratuities to the professional hunting staff and support teams based on the quality of service they receive. However this still remains a personal choice, reflecting your gratitude for the team's hard work. These men and women work irregular hours, starting early and finishing late, to ensure your safari is a success.

The process of tipping can vary from one camp to another. It’s always a good idea to communicate with your outfitter ahead of time or during the safari to understand how tipping works at that particular location.

Typically, gratuities are given at the end of your safari before you depart. In many cases, the outfitter or guide will organize a farewell where you can personally hand tips to the team. If some staff members are unavailable due to duties, you can leave their tips in sealed envelopes with the person in charge, who will ensure they receive them.

THE RISE OF HIGH FENCES IN SOUTH AFRICAN WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT

One of the most frequently asked questions by hunting enthusiasts looking to experience the wild beauty of South Africa is, "Is your hunting area high fenced?" The answer, more often than not, is yes. In fact, over 95% of hunting in South Africa occurs within high-fenced areas. Even the iconic Kruger National Park, an expanse larger than Israel, is surrounded by these barriers. But how did high fences become such an integral part of wildlife management?

Historical Necessity

In the early days, game was essential for the survival of settlers and pioneers as a primary source of food. However, as agricultural development increased, so did the human population. Wild animals, once a resource, became competitors for grazing land, clashing with the burgeoning livestock industry. Paid bounty hunters were even employed to eliminate wildlife that threatened the success of farming ventures. The solution to this growing conflict was simple: fence off the land.

The Ever-Present Human-Wildlife Conflict

From the dawn of time, humans have feared wild animals, especially predators. Large animals like lions, elephants, and leopards posed significant threats not only to human life but also to livestock. Additionally, certain species like kudu caused substantial damage to crops, while others, such as bushpigs, are nearly impossible to contain. With modern technology, the answer to these problems became clear: fencing could control and reduce human-wildlife conflict in a world where coexistence is no longer viable.

Controlling Disease

Wildlife not only posed threats in terms of competition to domestic stock but also as carriers of diseases that could decimate South Africa’s cattle and sheep industry. For instance, buffalo carry hoof-and-mouth disease and corridor disease, both lethal to cattle. Fences were erected as a safeguard, preventing wildlife from spreading these deadly diseases to livestock. In some cases, however, diseases like bovine tuberculosis now spread from domestic cattle to wildlife, affecting wildlife species within even the Kruger National Park.

Changing Laws and the Birth of Game Ownership

Under South African law, wildlife was considered res nullius—belonging to no one, and thus, the state. However, as game ranching became a significant industry, this legal framework needed an update. Landowners needed assurances that the animals they invested in were legally theirs, and with the passing of the Game Theft Act in 1991, private ownership of game became a reality. This law paved the way for high fencing to become more widespread, offering game ranchers security and protection from poachers. Now, anyone caught poaching could be prosecuted under the Stock Theft Act, with much harsher penalties than simple trespassing.

Game Breeding and Its Perception

The rise of game breeding has created the perception that South Africa has been carved into small, fenced-off camps. While this may be true for a few ranches, it represents a small portion of the industry. During times of drought, some breeders even removed internal fences to help manage costs and protect their animals. The reality is that both hunters and game breeders have the right to use their land as they see fit, and there are still vast, high-fenced properties available for those seeking a hunting experience. Ultimately, the choice belongs to the hunter.

Certificate of Adequate Enclosure

The Certificate of Adequate Enclosure grants landowners significant freedom in managing their properties, provided they meet the minimum fencing requirements set by provincial nature conservation authorities. With this certification, landowners can conduct hunting year-round without the need for multiple permits, streamlining their operations. However, as each of South Africa’s nine provinces has its own nature conservation regulations, this can vary depending on where you hunt.

The Effectiveness of Fences

While high fences may seem like an impenetrable barrier, many animals have found ways to bypass them. Smaller species like warthogs and bushbuck can easily creep under fences, while larger animals like kudu and eland can effortlessly leap over. As a result, electric fencing and other reinforcements have become necessary in certain areas to ensure the containment of wildlife.

High Fences in Modern Times

With human populations growing rapidly, more land is being demanded for housing and agriculture, putting wildlife habitats at risk. In many cases, high fences are the only barrier between human settlements and the wild. As romantic as the idea of hunting across Africa's open plains may be, high fences are becoming more prevalent not just in South Africa, but across neighbouring countries like Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Mozambique. These fences provide security, ensuring that conservation efforts are protected and that communities are safe from wandering wildlife.

High fences are now an essential tool for maintaining the delicate balance between wildlife conservation, agriculture, and human safety. They ensure that the investment of time, money, and effort into South Africa’s wildlife industry is secure, while also protecting those who live alongside these areas.

As hunting outfitters in South Africa, we increasingly embrace our responsibility to conservation and community development, recognising that our role goes far beyond the hunt. Through our dedicated social responsibility programs, we are making a significant impact by preserving wildlife habitats, supporting anti-poaching efforts, and uplifting local communities. Our partnerships with conservation organisations are crucial in funding research and protection initiatives that ensure sustainable hunting practices, safeguarding the future of South Africa’s native species and maintaining the rich biodiversity of our wilderness areas.

But our commitment doesn’t stop with environmental conservation. We believe in giving back to the communities that coexist with wildlife. Our outreach programs are designed to uplift rural areas where hunting activities are prevalent by sponsoring educational initiatives, job training, and healthcare services. By creating economic opportunities and supporting local businesses, we are helping to alleviate poverty and drive community development. These efforts not only improve the quality of life for local residents but also strengthen the bond between the hunting industry and the communities we serve.

Personally, I have been involved in numerous outreach programs since the start of my hunting career. One of the most rewarding experiences has been donating hunts to physically challenged hunters through Safari Club International (SCI). Guiding hunts for individuals in wheelchairs, including an incredible young blind man who successfully hunted four animals with a rifle and two with a bow, has been nothing short of inspiring.

Our latest initiative focuses on supporting a local orphanage, where we provide underprivileged children with essential supplies like staple foods, venison, and firewood for heating and cooking. We understand that sustained and committed support is essential to making a lasting difference in their lives.

I’m proud to share some photos of a school in KwaZulu-Natal that I’ve supported, where we replaced their broken-down kitchen with a secure, lockable container equipped with a fully functional kitchen. This facility now allows them to prepare what is often the only meal these children receive each day, a vast improvement from cooking over an open fire.

A Success Story

It all started some years ago with the support and development funding financed by Safari Club International (SCI).

I (Peter Ruddle) am always amazed at all the people, organisations and political parties that come out of the woodwork to take credit when a vision comes to realisation and the unsung heroes are overlooked. The central figure and driving force behind this particular project was Inkosi (Chief) Daniel Hlabisa of the Mpembeni Community, near the small town of Hlabisa in KwaZulu-Natal, who had the vision to establish an ecotourism enterprise.

It all began in the year 2000, when Nic Vaughan-Jones, a professional hunter took up the challenge of initiating the project having secured finance to fence off the Mpembeni Community Conservation Game Reserve (MCCGR). Without financing from SCI, this project would never have seen the light of day. Let it never be said, “What do hunters do for conservation?”

The 750ha (1,850 acres) of land set aside by the community consisted mainly of abandoned agricultural lands and three koppies adjoining the original Hluhluwe Game Reserve (HGR) at the time administrated by the then Natal Parks Board (NPB).

Nic got the Umbono Foundation involved. This was a foundation established by Pastor Terence Rose and Nic Vaughan-Jones. Umbono is a charitable organisation to aid and assist rural communities in Africa. This partnership with the church was a major turning point and through their efforts, we gained the trust and support of the community at large.

Another factor was the influence that the late Albert Ngcobo had on the project. He worked tirelessly to change people’s opinions on the advantages of having such a reserve with an ecotourism lodge.

There were many hurdles and sceptics to be overcome. Unfortunately, he passed away before the lodge was built and would never see the completion of the project. There are not many community people who are (were) prepared to voluntarily work on a project for the benefit of their fellow citizens.

The Umbono Foundation built a clinic and a crèche for the community under the auspice of the MCCGR project. Soon after this, Nic moved to southern Mozambique to continue the work of this Foundation.

Up to this point, I had undertaken all the marketing and trophy hunting conducted at the reserve and we had built up a little nest egg but did not have anywhere near enough money to build a lodge. The responsibility was now mine to oversee the project. So, we continued without a lodge and this made marketing hunts at the reserve very difficult.

Hunters used accommodation near Hluhluwe or at St. Lucia town when hunting in the reserve. This meant we had to drive for an hour to get to the reserve before we could hunt, not ideal, making the marketing of these hunts very difficult and off-putting to many potential clients.

My management input was also limited as I lived four hours from the reserve and I also noticed that the game numbers were starting to dwindle and trophy animals becoming few and far between. Was this the start of the end?

Unbeknown to me, Inkosi had asked the local section manager from HGR to shoot him a few animals for a ceremony. By this time the Natal Parks Board had been replaced by Ezemvelo KwaZulu-Natal Wildlife. This provincial conservation body now administered the Park and had their fair share of problems. One of them was the section ranger in question, who was dismissed by the organisation. We were never given the reasons for his dismissal but still very suspicious that he was running a bush meat business at the local market. Many of these animals were being poached at Mpembeni. His demise came after eight Rhinos were found poached in one incident in his section of Hluhluwe Game Reserve. We can only speculate if he was involved or not.

However, after his dismissal, there was a definite increase in the game numbers at the MCCGR. Buffalo, leopards, giraffe, zebra, nyala, kudu, wildebeest and impala were hunted to achieve our goals and pay the bills. Nobody showed any interest in helping us to develop the reserve.

Many of the well-known non-hunting private reserves established in South Africa initially started as hunting areas and through the process of evolution changed their emphasis to non-consumptive ecotourism usage. What were our options?

Frencken and Associates (architects and property developers), who had worked with Nic on some previous projects had actually visited the lodge site in 2007. In fact, they had even pegged out the development.

I recommended to the Mpembeni Tribal Authority and reserve steering committee that we re-approach them to see if they might be interested in building a lodge. They dually accepted the challenge and it has without doubt been a mighty challenge.

They sourced the majority of the R25 million funding for the lodge from the National Empowerment Fund and also spent a large chunk of their development capital. Khumalo kept up the heat from his side and I worked alongside him smoothing the way for things to materialise. I will not bore you any further with the details but all sorts of people and departments now become involved and all taking credit for this project being launched. I would like to thank all those who genuinely made an effort to contribute to the success of this project.

Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge is operated and managed by Isibindi Africa, a tourism company with a successful record of working with rural communities. Khumalo continues to play a role in the project while following his political career.

Today, the guns are silent at Mpembeni as Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge and a hunting operation cannot coexist. So from a hunter’s point of view, let the question never be asked, “What does hunting do for conservation?”

The Macnab Challenge: From Postwar Scotland to Modern Times

Hunting in the world takes many forms. One of these forms is known as the Macnab Challenge. Originating from Great Britain and practiced in many other parts of the world, it involves harvesting a big game animal, a specified number of small game (usually birds), and catching a fish (usually on the fly) – all in one day. Where does this come from, what forms of the Macnab exist in the world, and why exactly it’s so challenging – that’s what this blog will tell you.

What is the history of the Macnab Challenge?

The concept and the title originate from “John Macnab”, a 1925 novel by John Buchan. In the book, three representatives of the British upper classes: a prominent attorney, an investment banker, and an aristocratic Member of Parliament, found themselves suffering from what we would call a mid-life crisis intensified by post-traumatic stress disorder (all three being WWI vets), and they described as “ennui”: the spark was gone from their safe, predictable, and successful existence, and their enviable lives felt hardly worth living any more.

An old, wise doctor advised the characters, in modern terms, to get out of their comfort zone: to engage in something that would involve overcoming difficulties, sacrificing comfort, and a certain degree of real risk. And that’s exactly what they do – in the form of a gentleman poaching challenge.

They throw the gauntlet to several landowners, announcing their intent, on a certain date, to sneak into their land and kill a stag or salmon . The bounty would be, it being no theft, returned to the rightful possessor on the following morning. And they dare the owner to take all measures against their attempt. If they fail, they would donate a substantial sum to the charity chosen by the landowner. Of course, if the fact of their engagement in this matter becomes public knowledge, it would hurt their professional reputation. So, to maintain anonymity at least initially, until they are caught, the trio assumes a joint nom-de-guerre of John Macnab.

Red deer is the key quarry of the traditional Macnab Challenge

Using an old friend’s estate as a base, and assisted by a few locals including an old professional deer stalker and a fishmonger boy, they embark on the adventure in the Scottish Highlands. With each of the three landowners – the good, the bad, and the American – the mission gets more and more impossible, and the characters have to face a number of unexpected complications including an archaeological discovery, a political rally, and their host falling in love with one of the adversaries’ daughters, who has her reasons to want the culprits captured.

“John Macnab” is a fun and exciting book, and obtained something of a cult status among British hunters and anglers. And of course more than a few of them felt inspired to repeat the adventure of the heroes. That’s how the Macnab Challenge was born.

What kinds of Macnab Challenge exist?

It’s safe to say that no hunter who takes part in the Macnab Challenge does it exactly the same way as three gentlemen from “John Macnab”. The challenge evolved over the years, and adopted various forms to suit different environments. The leading British outdoor magazine, The Field, singles out as many as ten types of the Macnab Challenge:

Real Macnab:

The Real Macnab fully follows the escapade of the heroes in the original John Buchan’s novel: it’s limited to a red stag and/or a salmon on the fly, and the game must be “poached” in a legal sporting manner. These days it’s practically another form of a guided hunt, where the guides, contrary to usual pattern, try to prevent the client from succeeding rather than assist in the chase. The Field runs a free service connecting hunters and anglers willing to take the challenge with the estates willing to accept it.

Classic Macnab:

Obviously, many hunters still hold to the old-fashioned belief that running from game wardens isn’t what makes hunting fun. But they would appreciate the extra challenge nonetheless. Such hunters came up with what is now known as the Classic Macnab. This is a hunt done in fully legal manner, and the challenge is to kill three different types of game in one day: a red stag by stalking with a rifle, a salmon on a fly , and a brace of grouse with a shotgun. A “brace”, as referring to grouse, is two birds. When they are talking about Macnab in the UK, in most cases they mean the Classic Macnab.

Macnab in England

The Classic Macnab is all about the Highlands of Scotland . With reservations, you can possibly achieve it in Scottish Lowlands, and some locations in the north of England . However, the sportsmen and -women who lived elsewhere in Great Britain didn’t want to be left behind, and developed their own local versions of the Macnab Challenge:

Southern Macnab: A couple of snipe , a sea-trout and a roe buck .
Macmarsh: A foreshore goose, a pike and a fallow buck.
Macnorfolk: A bass on the fly, a brace of wild grey partridges and a fallow buck.

Macnab with Hounds

As you probably know, in the British outdoor lingo “hunting” still means specifically riding on a horse following a pack of hounds in pursuit of the game. To the enthusiasts of thus pursuit there exist two more types of the Macnab Challenge:

Corinthian Macnab: Here you ride to hounds in the morning, then shoot a brace of partridges in the afternoon and finish the day catching a trout on the fly .
Maccharlie: This version of the Macnab involves riding after three different types of hounds, pursuing different animals: foxhounds, harriers, and staghounds.

Macnab Challenge all over the World

The Macnab Challenge is practiced well outside the British Isles, and of course has to be adapted to local environments and fauna. The Field singles out three forms of Macnab:

Macscandi: For the outdoorsmen in Scandinavia, the challenge is to harvest a moose , a capercaillie , and a trout on the fly within 24 hours.
Macargentinian: Although there is trout in Argentina , the local version of the challenge involves a much more exciting local fish: golden dorado . Since shooting two birds in Argentina is hardly an achievement, the local Macnab requires 100 brace of doves , and the crown of the challenge is, surprisingly, not a red stag but a wild pig.
Macafrican: The African version of the Macnab Challenge, as listed by The Field, is a brace of sandgrouse , an impala and a tigerfish in one day.

Any hunter who has a little fantasy can see that the above list is far from extensive. Even in Africa we know of other sets, namely a guineafowl , an impala , and a trout on a fly in a day. In New England or Maritime Canada it could be a white-tailed deer , a brown trout , and ruffled grouse, in the West a mule deer , cutthroat trout , and mountain quail , and so on, and so forth.

Why is Macnab Challenge popular?

The Macnab Challenge arouses the interest and excites hunters and anglers all over the world, because it’s what the name promises: a challenge. In simple words: even where all respective beasts, birds, and fish are abundant, getting all three in one day is very difficult. Just the timing alone is enough of a constraint: while there are locations in the world, where you could shoot the birds, kill the deer, and catch the fish without taking a step, you will usually have to spend quite a lot of time just getting from the fishing sweet spot to where the deer could be and then to the birdy area.

What’s more, it requires the participants to utilize a very different set of skills at each stage. Even rifle and shotgun shooting are as different as night and day (if you need to learn why and how, you can start with our blogs on “ Your first rifle ” and “ Your first shotgun ”). Small game , like grouse, and big game , like deer, use different predator detection and escape strategies. And with fishing you literally find yourself in a different element. You have to be really an all-around outdoorsperson to excel at the Macnab Challenge.

Strategy is all-important, and so is understanding the local environment. In some areas you’ll find it the hardest to bag the deer, in others the deer won’t be much of a problem, but the fish would be very stubborn and sophisticated, and so on. Then again, do you start with the easiest parts, to get them over and done with quickly, or do you begin with what you perceive as the hardest, and leave the lesser challenges for later?

But perhaps the most difficult part of the challenge is psychological. Shifting from one mode of operation to another, using different skills, behaviors, and strategies, requires a great deal of self-control. So is the psychological pressure – when you absolutely have to catch that fish within an hour or two, it’s a totally different scenario from where you can spend the whole day not catching anything and be OK with it.

One of the best parts of the Macnab Challenge is that it refutes, by its very existence, the often heard claim that “hunting is simply killing defenseless animals”. If getting a deer or a brace of grouse was so easy, the challenge would be quite easy to accomplish, and would not be any challenge. Besides, if hunting was only about the killing, the hunters would want to simplify their hunt, so that they could kill more. They wouldn’t be inventing elaborate rules that greatly decrease their chances of a kill.

In John Buchan’s novel, each of the heroes undergoes a spiritual transformation, rekindling a zest for life and rediscovering their purpose and vigor. The story is not just about the physical hunt but also about the rejuvenation of the spirit. An Experience I Will Never Forget: My African Macnab Challenge

We drove through winding bushveld sand trails, and what we saw looked like a scene from The Lion King. A herd of some twenty oryx , with a baby running behind, then some zebras galloping across a plain with impalas in tow, then more oryx and a herd of red hartebeest .

We crossed over to the Emoyehle game reserve, stopped at a large plain, and saw four guineafowl walking about a hundred yards in the distance. We hopped out; Vian put the tripod and I took a 110 yard shot at a small common blue headed (helmeted) guinea fowl . It flapped around for half a second – dead. It was only 6:30 A.M., and I was already “blooded” with my first animal of the African Macnab Challenge.

Why the African Macnab Challenge?

I grew up in Michigan and have always enjoyed fishing in the Great Lakes , particularly for walleye and perch . That recently branched into hunting. I’ve been pheasant hunting several times. It’s a ton of fun, and no matter how many you get, it’s good to be out with your friends. White-tailed deer are also popular in Michigan. I haven’t shot a deer yet, but I’m looking forward to doing it in the next few years.

During my semester abroad, I decided it was time to try a South African hunt . As I was searching for short safaris on BookYourHunt.com , the offer from Rust de Winters Safaris immediately caught my attention. It was creatively written and illustrated their true dedication to their preserve. I had never heard about the Macnab Challenge before, but as I came across this option, I knew this was the hunt that I would pick.

The challenge begins

First thing in the morning I saw many guinea fowl active right in the lodge yard. Vian, my PH on this trip, and I drove down the red rocky road trail to a small valley for target practice. There was a .30-06 Howa with a sound moderator for big game, and a .222 Sako rifle for guinea fowl. Having made sure I could hit the target with both rifles, we went after the guinea fowl, and soon I crossed the first item of my challenge off the list.

The impala hunting was amazing, but I soon realized why it was called a challenge. First, the Can Am that we used to drive across the preserve had a tire punctured by a sickle bush branch. These branches look and work like spike traps that police throw down to stop criminals. Vian tried to fix it with a gummy paste he stuffed in the hole with a metal rod, but the tire kept losing air, and we eventually had to replace the Can Am with an uplifted Toyota Land Cruiser.

As it was, we drove on, passing Vian’s honeybee farm and an empty waterhole. Then we hopped out with the tripod and the .30-06, and walked in the brush, me following Vian’s footsteps. We spotted a large impala with huge horns, that Vian estimated at 23″, standing behind a bush, set up the rifle, but only the head of the animal was visible, and it eventually walked behind the brush and disappeared.

We went back to the vehicle and drove through a small plain. Vian told me how the buffalo use the mud pits as a sunblock front rolling around before grazing in the morning sun. We saw several kudu ; two wildebeests fighting, butting heads, a small warthog chasing them after they ran away. We passed a field of aloe trees and saw an impala herd, walked after them, I carried the rifle, Vian carried the tripod, Peter, the hunting operator, carried a camera, but we could not catch up with the herd.

We drove on, seeing a herd of Cape buffalo , who snorted at us and walked off, and entered an exotic hotspot for bucks. There we saw a large tsessebe buck, along with bronze colored young ones with straight horns, and a massive bull sable , a couple of decent sized zebras, five or six white-faced blesboks, four giraffe with young, and finally a herd of large impala bucks mixed with blesboks. We parked the truck and walked around the side of the road while crouching slowly and holding the rifle, avoiding sticks and leaves, stepping on rocks, but they moved on by the time we reached the area.

It was heating up and sunny, quite hot even though it was only 8:50 a.m., and with heat there was less activity and animals were more prone to noises. We kept driving on, seeing more and more amazing things like small Chinese lantern flowers on trees, small yellow buds blossoming to pink sprout on top, bushpigs and wildebeest shaking heads at the truck, and a hornbill zazu bird, with alternating white feathers and a large yellow curved beak. Vian had to stop and drag aside a large branch that elephants had torn off the tree to the side of the path. Elephants can be quite destructive apparently.

We passed a small, torn-down red brick homestead where farm laborers used to live, drove along the top of the hill, and spotted some decent sized impala in shooting distance. I got behind the rifle and zeroed into one. The horns were behind the tree, but vitals were visible. I did not take the shot due to not seeing antlers. Vian slowly crept forward, I stayed in standing position, scoped into two rams lined back to back, but the next second they ran away.

We went on, and saw some more animals, including a small duiker running 40 km/h or even faster, a shaggy fur waterbuck , and several large impalas, but I couldn’t get a clear shot on any of them. The last chance was on a herd that ran towards us, only twenty meters away, with a decent sized male within the group. A doe led the herd and kept running, didn’t slow down so the entire herd followed. According to Vian, the hunting season for local residents had just ended, and that made the animals more sensitive to people.

Back at the lodge, at brunch, Stefan, the owner of the preserve, said that we had an option of replacing the impala with a blesbok , but I was still set on an impala, so we dropped the fishing poles off and headed back to the reserve to find them.

We were in for some more Lion King scenes: wildebeests and reedbucks sprinting quickly into the plain in a trail of dust, shaggy waterbucks, giraffes eating leaves in the fading sunlight, kudus, oryx feeding in water buckets, and heard a long-billed bird squawking. We drove right up alongside some sable, a herd of eland , saw mongooses running, scented thorn acacia trees spread across the plain, but encountered only one young impala that disappeared into the brush before I could aim.

At about 5:30 p.m. Vian said that blesboks were likely moving to the open grass plain to graze in the evening, and in his opinion with their calmness they could be the best opportunity to complete the challenge before sunset. Lo and behold, he soon found an open field that was a grazing heaven with blesbok. They were walking, grazing and running all over, and it was difficult to identify male from female.

I took control of the rifle, Peter was to my left with binoculars advising which of the herd was the buck. We established the right-most buck, at about 125-131 yards, was a male and a suitable trophy. He began walking away from us, then turned broadside behind brush. It moved slowly forward into ‘v’ shape of visible vitals between bushes as it grazed. I said: “I have a clear shot, I am going to take the shot.” Hearing no objections from Peter and Vian, I fired.

I grabbed the rifle, and walked with Peter to the place where the blesbok was hit. We found no blood trail, but quickly found the buck lying under a tree, some twenty feet away from the sandy road. Peter said that most bucks shot in the vitals take a short run on adrenalin before collapsing, not knowing their lungs were hit.

After the challenge

We celebrated with a mountain trail drive to see the amazing orange and pink cloudy African sunset, and watched giraffes and zebras and the elephant water hole habitat. At the lodge we had another excellent dinner, starting with a tray of beef biltong, then springbok carpaccio, boiled beef boerewors sausage, grilled beef steak, baked chicken thighs, coleslaw, cheese potato casserole, and mushroom cheese sauce for steak. Vian gave me some aloe cream honey he made from the honey bee farms. Overall, I cannot wait to come back, as this was an experience I will never forget.

An Alternative to Trophy Mounts

Can 3D printing provide a viable alternative in response to potential or existing bans on trophy imports?

First and foremost, it is essential to emphasise that Rust De Winter Safaris remains a staunch advocate for the legal, responsible, and sustainable use of wildlife. These principles are the cornerstone of our business. However, as more institutions and governments bow to public pressure by withdrawing their support for trophy hunting—often ignoring scientific evidence—the repercussions on Africa's conservation model are becoming more pronounced. The impact is evident as more land is being converted for agricultural purposes. For instance, in Tanzania, several unprofitable hunting concessions have been returned to the government, resulting in the destruction of wildlife and the degradation of once-thriving habitats into wastelands.

The situation has been further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has left many conservation agencies, local communities, and both photographic and hunting operators struggling with significant budget shortfalls. The ongoing effects on wildlife populations and habitat destruction are already being documented. Trees are being cut down for charcoal, and poaching has escalated as people resort to alternative means of survival, including the bushmeat trade.

In contrast, Namibia has openly supported hunting, recognizing the undeniable socio-economic benefits it brings to communities when managed sustainably. A regulated industry is far preferable to an unregulated free-for-all that could accelerate the extinction of local fauna and flora.

The pressure to ban hunting, particularly from Western governments and certain groups within the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), has led to discussions among Southern African Development Community (SADC) states about possibly withdrawing from the organization. Many African nations are IUCN members, which oversees the legal trade of wildlife and plants. However, policy changes driven by emotion rather than science could impact the legal import and export of hunting trophies, one of the reasons holding back these nations from leaving the IUCN.

Given this mounting pressure, are there alternatives for hunters? While some clients are content with the experience and participate in management hunts without exporting animal products, the majority of trophy hunters still desire more than just a photograph to commemorate their hunt, opting instead to have their trophies mounted.

Though individual countries may ban trophy imports, such bans cannot be enforced in other countries. This means that while hunters may still legally hunt, they might not be able to export their trophies, a prospect that may not appeal to those who wish to display their mounted memories.

Taxidermy and 3D Printing: A New Frontier

Taxidermists are beginning to explore 3D printing technology as a possible alternative to traditional taxidermy. This technology allows for the creation of exact replicas of skulls, horns, and tusks using synthetic materials, producing a final product that is nearly indistinguishable from the original.

3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, involves constructing a three-dimensional object through a computer-controlled process. Since its inception in the 1990s, 3D printing has made significant strides, enabling the precise replication of complex shapes that would be nearly impossible to craft by hand. The process also allows for the creation of lightweight, hollow moulds supported by internal structures, with realistic finishes and colours.

A wide range of materials can be used in 3D printing, including ABS plastic, PLA, polyamide (nylon), glass-filled polyamide, epoxy resins, silver, wax, photopolymers, polycarbonate, titanium, steel, stainless steel, and aluminium. This diversity offers more design options and applications for both indoor and outdoor trophy displays than traditional taxidermy, which can be vulnerable to sunlight, heat, mould, mildew, and insect damage.

While 3D printing has not yet advanced to replicate the textures of hide and hair, and therefore cannot fully replace traditional mounted trophies, it offers a durable, low-maintenance alternative. These replicas can be safely handled, easily dusted, and stored without the risk of damage from environmental factors.

Moreover, the marketing value of traditional taxidermy in the hunting industry should not be overlooked. The anticipation of receiving a mounted trophy often motivates clients to book their next hunting trip, sustaining the business for outfitters. While taxidermists may view 3D printing as a value-added service rather than a replacement, the technology offers promising new possibilities.

Applications of 3D Printing

Beyond taxidermy, 3D printing has made significant strides in various fields, including medicine, where patient-specific body parts and organs can be created. Designers can now translate flat-screen designs into physical objects, ranging from toys to aerospace components.

In the art world, 3D printing is used for fashion design, architecture, interior design, and jewellery. For instance, a hunter's skull can be reproduced as a highly detailed miniature sculpture or ornamental piece in bronze, brass, sterling silver, or gold. Full-size models, unpainted or otherwise, can serve as modern interior or exterior decorations.

Although shoulder mount technology has yet to reach the market, it is only a matter of time before it is developed. In the meantime, hunters have several advantages to consider when it comes to 3D-printed trophy mounts:

Advantages of 3D Printing in Taxidermy

Traditional taxidermy requires time and precision to ensure mounts are properly tanned, mounted, and prepared for export, whether as raw prepped (salted, dipped, and packed) or mounted specimens that meet European Union and US Fish and Wildlife specifications. These processes contribute to the overall cost of taxidermy. However, 3D printing, with its use of plastics and composite materials, can streamline this process and reduce costs.

Exporting traditional trophies also involves fumigating and treating wood for export crates, sealing raw-prep trophies in plastic for inspection upon arrival in EU countries, and complying with a host of other requirements. These steps can be eliminated with 3D-printed products, which can be exported as standard souvenirs.

Preserving Memories for Posterity

One of the most significant advantages of 3D printing is the ability to save a scanned trophy in the cloud, allowing it to be recreated at any time. If a traditional trophy is lost due to fire or theft, it can be easily replicated.

Advancements in Measuring and Scoring

The scanning procedure for 3D printing is simple and more accurate than traditional tape measures. Portable scanning devices can be sent to hunters, with files verified by official Safari Club International (SCI) measurers. This tool is being evaluated for use as the official SCI measuring method.

Furthermore, the data collected from scanned trophies can be used for research and hunting records, providing valuable information for conservation decision-making by organizations like the IUCN.

Simplifying Trophy Export Documentation

The complex paperwork required for exporting trophies—export permits, CITES permits, veterinary certificates, and more—can be bypassed with 3D-printed trophies. These products can be shipped as regular souvenirs, eliminating the need for extensive documentation.

Avoiding Trophy Boycotts
